Calculate Chronological Age
Enter a date of birth and the date you want to calculate age for. Use the actual assessment date when calculating age for a test or evaluation.
Your dates are calculated in your browser and are not sent to a calculator server.
What is your exact chronological age? Enter your date of birth and a reference date above to calculate your age in completed years, months, and days. You can use today’s date for your current age or choose a specific date to find how old you were on a past date or how old you will be on a future date.
This free Chronological Age Calculator uses calendar-based date calculation rather than estimating age from a fixed number of days per year. It accounts for different month lengths and leap years and gives you the result in a clear years, months, and days format.
What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is the amount of calendar time that has passed between a person’s date of birth and a chosen reference date. It is normally expressed as years, months, and days.
For example, if someone was born on March 15, 2010 and their age is calculated on June 10, 2023, their chronological age is 13 years, 2 months, and 26 days.
Chronological age is different from biological age or developmental age. This calculator measures only calendar age based on the two dates you enter.
How to Use the Chronological Age Calculator
- Enter the person’s Date of Birth.
- Enter the Age As Of / Assessment Date.
- Click Calculate Age.
- Read the exact age in years, months, and days.
- Use the Y;M;D result when a form or workflow calls for that notation.
When calculating age for an assessment, use the date the assessment was actually administered when the relevant test instructions require age at testing. A report written several days later does not automatically change the assessment date.
Age as of Today vs. Age on a Specific Date
You can calculate chronological age using today’s date or any other reference date. The correct date depends on what you are trying to determine.
How Chronological Age Is Calculated
The calculator compares the date of birth with the selected reference date and separates the elapsed time into completed years, completed months, and remaining days.
The calculation follows a calendar borrowing method:
- Subtract the birth day from the reference-date day.
- If the day calculation is negative, borrow the actual number of days from the previous calendar month.
- Subtract the months. If the month result is negative, borrow 12 months from the year.
- Subtract the years.
The calculator uses the actual length of the relevant calendar month rather than assuming that every month contains 30 days.
Worked Example
Suppose the date of birth is March 15, 2010 and the reference date is June 10, 2023.
In Y;M;D format, the result is 13;02;26.
Chronological age: 13 years, 2 months, 26 days.
Why the Exact Date Matters
For everyday questions, saying that someone is 10 years old may be enough. However, some forms, assessments, school processes, and records require age on a specific date.
For assessment users, the important detail is often the date at which age is being determined. Pearson assessment materials, for example, include a dedicated age-calculation section using a Test Date and Birth Date and instruct users not to round the age up to the next month or year. Always follow the current instructions for the specific assessment you are using.
For official applications or legal records, use the date shown on your official documents and follow the requirements of the relevant organization. This calculator is a date-calculation utility and does not determine eligibility under a particular law, policy, school rule, or assessment manual.
What Does Y;M;D Mean?
Y;M;D means Years;Months;Days.
For example:
- 7;03;14 means 7 years, 3 months, and 14 days.
- 12;00;00 means exactly 12 years.
- 5;06;02 means 5 years, 6 months, and 2 days.
The Y;M;D display is a convenient reporting format. Different assessments and organizations can have their own age-reporting instructions, so check the relevant documentation before using the result for formal scoring or documentation.
Does the Calculator Handle Leap Years?
Yes. The calculator uses calendar dates and recognizes that February can contain 28 or 29 days depending on the year. Month lengths are also handled individually rather than treating every month as a fixed 30-day period.
This is important when calculating age around February, month-end dates, and other calendar boundaries.
What Is Total Age in Months?
Total completed months express chronological age as a single month count. For example, someone who is 7 years and 3 completed months old has completed 87 months.
Total months can be useful when a form or application asks for age in months rather than years and months.
Chronological Age vs. Biological Age
Chronological age is based only on calendar dates.
Biological age refers to measures intended to describe aspects of physiological aging and is not calculated simply by subtracting one calendar date from another.
Our calculator only calculates chronological age.
Important Limitations
- This tool calculates chronological age from two calendar dates.
- It does not calculate biological age.
- It does not calculate corrected or adjusted age for premature birth.
- It does not decide which age-reporting or rounding rule a specific assessment manual requires.
- For official forms, examinations, legal matters, or standardized testing, verify the result against the applicable instructions.

Can I calculate age on a future date?
Yes. Choose a future reference date to calculate what the chronological age will be on that date.
Can I use this calculator for school or standardized assessments?
You can use it to calculate the chronological age between a birth date and an assessment date, but the specific test or organization may have its own age-reporting or rounding instructions. Always follow the current instructions for the assessment you are using.
What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?
Chronological age is calculated from calendar dates. Biological age refers to measures associated with physiological aging and is not calculated directly from a date of birth.
Does this calculator calculate corrected age for premature babies?
No. This tool calculates chronological age only. Corrected or adjusted age is a separate calculation and should be determined according to the relevant clinical or developmental guidance.
Are my dates sent to a server?
The calculator performs its date calculation in your browser. The tool does not require an account or a server-side calculation to produce the result.
